HMRC will soon be sending letters to some sole traders and landlords as part of the move towards Making Tax Digital (MTD) for Income Tax. If you receive one of these letters, don’t be alarmed – this is simply an early notification about changes coming into effect from April 2026.
Who does this affect?
MTD for Income Tax will apply to sole traders and landlords whose total income from self-employment or property exceeds £50,000. If your income is below this threshold, you won’t need to take any action at this stage.
What should you do if you get a letter?
If you receive a letter from HMRC, we encourage you let us know so we can ensure our records stay up to date. There’s nothing you need to do immediately – MTD for Income Tax is not mandatory until April 2026, and we are still awaiting further clarification from HMRC on exactly how the reporting will work.
How we’re supporting you
We are closely monitoring the situation and will provide clear guidance to those affected as soon as more details become available. Our team will ensure you have all the necessary information and support well ahead of any required changes.
